The HVAC Technician shall have minimum 4 years of journeyman level experience working on industrial HVAC systems.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Qualifications/ Skills and Knowledge

• Skills to repair, modify, maintain, service, perform preventive maintenance of air conditioning units, plants and systems, and related equipment in specific and/or critical areas. Be proficient in reading, interpreting, and applying complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, rough sketches, manufacturers’ instructions and literature, and other written guides and work instructions and readily understand oral instructions and equipment specifications and requirements. Be responsible for completing work orders as assigned or on any emergency basis, and for maintaining required records, accounting for time/materials and cost of repairs.
• Lay out, and install critical climatic units, insuring balance and readout. The HVAC Mechanic shall alter, or substitute required components to meet conditions in different areas to provide comfort to patients and staff. Overhaul and maintain a variety of refrigerating units such as testing calibrations on critical units, freezers, hot and cold food carts, individual heat pumps, water chilling systems, and units interlocked with solar systems. Have the skillsets and knowledge to work independently to check elements such as those which control internal pressures, temperatures of cooling units and running time of various machines, to visually leak-check and perform an audible examination of equipment, work with others in installing heavy roof-mounted units, ceiling installation, and/or where problems arise, and incumbent’s knowledge is needed. Respond immediately to service vital, malfunctioning equipment in all areas, and work with or trains others in the operation of equipment. Be familiar with proper inspection and maintenance practices in the trade, using manufacturers’ information, literature and instructions, or trade guides and maintenance manuals. Have the ability to fabricate duct work, using proper tools and equipment common to the air conditioning/refrigeration trade, to determine from own knowledge or by referring to manufacturers’ literature, the pipe sizes to be used in specific applications, to select tools, equipment, instruments and/or The HVAC mechanic shall have the knowledge and skill to use electronic meters and/or thermometers to determine and correct temperatures and air changes and to balance heat loads.

Other Qualifications:

a) Basic Literacy: Accepted trade and shop knowledge expected of a full performance journeyman, including the knowledge and ability to read and write and to use simple shop or trade mathematics.

b)Safety: Knowledge of local and national safety codes and the knowledge and ability to conduct work in accordance with established regulations, including Medical Center regulations, with respect to own and co-workers’ safety. Knowledge and ability to always adhere to proper safety practices, and to encourage proper safety practices among fellow employees.

c) Operate vehicles: Knowledge and ability to operate motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, and motor scooters. (Must have and maintain a current state driver license).

d) Responsibility: The contracted personnel work under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Shop supervisor

e) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Repairs and installations may be made from ladders, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in uncomfortable positions, and to pull, push, reach over the shoulder, and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.

WORK CONDITIONS:

The work is performed both inside and outside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, or chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/of uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawl spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical (equipment) closets. Repairs and installations might be required in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy on scaffolding and in close quarters such as manholes and attics.
