Job Description

The CRC Music Therapist directs therapeutic music activities prescribed to residents. Music therapist coordinates activities using music that caters to a client's individual needs. On an individual basis or in group sessions, the music therapist gives residents and families the opportunity to express themselves through the medium of music and improve their mental or physical health by taking part in a range of 'music experiences'. The music therapist collaborates with the clinical and operational treatment teams to coordinate care and schedule activities. The music therapist coordinates with the Family Integration Therapist to assist in working with families and assisting families in connecting and bonding through the medium of music.

Job-specific essential functions include the following:

TEAM FIRST: Makes every effort to maintain a 'team first' spirit and atmosphere within the workplace environment, maintaining appropriate working relationships and promoting collaboration.
Assesses each resident to determine need for ongoing individual music therapy.
Develops, administers and coordinates unit music activities and programs.
Provides musical entertainment at various activities and programs.
Implements music activities that facilitate non-musical goals (e.g., sensory stimulation, memory recall, positive failure, free experiences, socialization, etc.).
Assist residents in exploring a variety of musical styles and sounds with clients through singing, percussion, ethnic instruments and improvisation.
Completes necessary paperwork (progress notes, ITP updates, etc.) according to CCHO policy.
Monitors the condition of musical instruments (e.g., purchasing instruments and general maintenance.).
Works as part of clinical team in determining therapeutic objectives and goals; provides input to appropriate staff regarding music therapy.
Coordinates with Family Integration Therapist to provide music therapy to families as needed.
Coordinates, organizes and implements musical activity programs.
Provides treatment/interacts with clients and families utilizing Trust Based Relational Intervention modality.
Plans and performs group and individual activities appropriate to the needs of each resident and encourages participation.
Ensures each residents' physical, social, intellectual, spiritual and sensory emotional needs are met through independent or group activities.
Encourages residents to continue independent activities.
Provides relevant mental health training to cottage staff as directed/assigned.

Other duties may be assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLSABILITIES:

Ability and willingness to sing and play needed instruments either alone, with children, and/or on stage. Ability to set-up and use musical and sound equipment.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedure, or governmental regulations.
Ability to read, comprehend and write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate before groups of varying sizes of clients, employees or members of the public.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution, required. Must be able to communicate well with colleagues, verbally and in writing to ensure safety and efficiency.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to apply common sense. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Competency with Microsoft Office Suite and the internet, as well as CCHO clinical documentation software (electronic health record).
Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, as well as cope and tolerate high levels of stress.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

Bachelor's degree and Certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) required.
License in social work (LSW) or counseling (LPC) preferred.
Demonstrated proficiency providing music therapy to children required. Experience providing music therapy to children in residential treatment or equivalent strongly preferred.
Valid Ohio Driver's License and a driving record that allows that individual to be insurable on agency policy, as job includes occasional travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to speak and sing and be easily understood. Ability to play various musical instruments.
Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear, including a requirement to stand or walk for extended periods of time, sometimes through uneven terrain.
Often required to use hands/fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Regularly able to lift/move up to 75 pounds.
Must be able to be outdoors in various weather conditions for extended amounts of time.

Must be able to drive a vehicle legally and safely in the state of Ohio.
Must maintain compliance/certification with CCHO's requirements for using physical restraints (SCM: Safe Crisis Management), including sufficient strength and completion of extensive training. Physical ability to respond to crisis, including, but not limited to running and performing physical restraints.
