Under the direction of a Senior Engineering Geologist, the Materials & Research Engineering Associate (MREA) performs Non-Destructive evaluation (NDE) testing of transportation infrastructure, and assists with geophysical and engineering geology investigations for structure foundations and roadway geotechnical projects. In this capacity, the MREA conducts field studies, maintenance and calibration of test equipment, implements solutions for testing problems, and works either as part of a team or independently as necessary to conduct field testing. The incumbent will receive overall supervision from a Senior Engineering Geologist, who provides general instructions for each assignment.

Position located at 5900 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, Sacramento County.
As a statewide organization, the Caltrans Division of Engineering Services (DES) adjusts to periods of fluctuating workload to successfully deliver projects. Incumbent will be assigned duties on DES projects throughout the State as workload demands. Overtime and night work may be required to meet project demands. Incumbent will be required to travel to remote job sites and will be exposed to dirt, uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, and odor associated with field work. Incumbent will work around bulky or heavy materials and equipment used in the vicinity of construction or inspection areas. Incumbent will work adjacent to or in active traffic lanes and will be exposed to the motoring public. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.This position is subject to the Post & Bid process. In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Ability to understand specifications and test methods related to geophysical and non-destructive testing, and geologic studies. Recognize data deficiencies if they arise, and develop workable and effective solutions to problems related to test procedures or equipment. Independently apply sound judgment in test situations and to analyze factors capable of affecting test results is required. The ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing is required. The ability to deal tactfully with individuals and groups from the Department, contractors, other government agencies, and private consulting firms is required. Excellent field-note taking skills are required.
